We Hate Price Increases

We Hate Price Increases

We hate price increases, but we’re doing one anyway. Costs are way up due to COVID-related supply chain issues, and we can’t absorb the higher costs without a corresponding price increase. It’s not a decision we’ve made lightly, and as soon as costs go back down, we’ll be waiting in the wings with a reduction.

As you’ve no doubt seen in the news, the supply chain situation is crazier than ever....

The Dark Side of Backorders & Preorders

The Dark Side of Backorders & Preorders

Sold Out… Again? WTF?

Sold Out… Again? WTF?

(Spring/Summer 2021)

Sorry we’re out of stock on so many things. We’re trying to fix that. COVID delays didn’t help, but the long and short of it was a large increase in demand that we did not expect. We didn’t have the inventory on hand to support it, and it takes 6+ months to make more. We can’t just crack the whip and make it happen faster although we sure tried.

To decide what to build, we...

Rally For Rangers

Rally For Rangers

For reasons unknown to me, I haven’t been able to live without motorcycles in my life in one way or another since childhood.

I still have the bedsheet of my youth, a black and white mosaic of motorcycle images spanning motocross to MotoGP. There is no memory of asking for it, or why. I do remember Evel Kneivel, my childhood hero. Playing with that crank-up Evel bike...

Moto Packing List

Moto Packing List

Sometimes we get questions about what to take on an Adventure Motorcycle trip and how to pack the bike. There's no one-size-fits-all answer for that, because every trip is different. For example I have 4 different camping kits that I use on three different bikes with at least five different luggage setups. That said, there's some stuff that comes on every trip no matter what.

In this post I’ll...

Moto (Mat) Surfing

Moto (Mat) Surfing

If you're interested in a surf craft you can pack on a bike, a ‘surfmat’ might be the answer. Surfmats are inflatable floaties made from heavy duty TPU-coated nylon, with welded seams, a rough/sticky side facing up toward your body, and a smooth underside for gliding through the water.

Surfmats have a long and interesting history. The original surfmat was the ‘Surf-o-Plane,’ invented in Australia...

Moto Spearfishing

Moto Spearfishing

In 2017 Ash and I did a month-long moto trip in Baja, and we brought a compact spearfishing kit with us.

As it turned out, the bikes were a great way to access rocky points and remote beaches that normally don’t get a lot of fishing pressure. Finding camp spots with fishing potential added an interesting dynamic to the trip. There's something really satisfying about riding in, setting camp, and...

Security.

Security.

I’ll do my best to keep this short and brief enough that even us attention-deficit kids can read along. Realistically though, security is a topic that could fill a novel.

In this write-up I’ll make asset-security the focal point of discussion. Essentially, protecting the items that belong to us (namely: luggage and the motorcycle itself).

The funny thing about security is that it’s ever-evolving,...

MOSKO SURVIVAL RATE

MOSKO SURVIVAL RATE

MOSKO SURVIVAL RATE:  3 YEARS, 3 CONTINENTS, 1 DAKAR.

Three years ago, setting out on an indefinite RTW trip with no plan and no clue from Phoenix, Arizona, I checked my gear over and gave it 24 months. 30, if I was lucky. I’m a wobbly rider; I crash, I dump the bike in rivers, I get stuck in rainforests, life happens, and all of my gear gets abused more than it needs to.

Fast forward to three...

Backcountry 35: Worth the weight?

Backcountry 35: Worth the weight?

Sometimes we get complaints about the Backcountry 35 panniers being too heavy. At a little over 9 pounds apiece, they definitely weigh more than many other soft bags. They weigh almost as much as the smaller, lighter hard-sided panniers. It’s not really fair to compare a top of the line soft pannier to an entry level hard pannier, but anyway, it’s noteworthy.

When we created the Backcountry,...
