Staff ADV and Dual Sport Luggage Setups

Staff ADV and Dual Sport Luggage Setups

Our staff has been logging some adventure miles this riding season! We've had some epic trips exploring Borrego, checking out new routes in Moab at the Dusty Lizard, and riding doubletrack through central Oregon.

Take a look at some luggage kits the Mosko team has been running on ADV and dual sport rips this year.

BMW GSA, with Reckless 80L and Nomax Tank Bag

The king-sized BMW adventure bike is a lot of motorcycle for just about everyone—Killian Moreno is the only rider we know who handles the GSA like it's just another day of riding. For most riders, a little weight reduction in their kit goes a long way toward off-road handling, especially in technical rock or sandy washes. Killian ran the GSA with the Reckless 80L, trimming the weight of panniers and stock BMW racks. The R80 provides good capacity for ADV travel gear, while maintaining a smaller, lighter form factor that makes the GSA more pleasant off-road. On our Borrego trip, Killian ran the Nomax Tank Bag for the added 7L capacity, plus the Nomax's integrated hydration works well for riding with the Basilisk IR Jacket and Pant with no backpack.

This setup helps keep the XL adventure bike manageable in rowdy dirt riding, with plenty of volume for multiple days camping off the bike.

890 ADV-R with Backcountry Panniers and Duffle

The KTM 890 ADV-R is one of the most off-road capable mid-size ADV bikes in our staff fleet, thanks to the excellent WP suspension, its multiple ride modes, and the whopping 105hp powerplant. The bike’s great off-road character means it’ll pack a serious multi-day ADV camp kit, and still be a predictable and balanced machine in the dirt.

On our 10 day Moab trip, we ran it with the Backcountry Pannier 30L Kit and Backcountry 40L Duffle. This is one of our highest-capacity luggage setups, offering the option to pack for camping comfort and include plenty of tools and spares. The Gnome Tank Bag adds a glovebox to the bike’s cockpit, keeping all the daily riding essentials organized right at hand. The Wildcat 12L backpack keeps hydration, layers, tools, and other gear easy to access.

This is a great luggage setup for riders wanting a bombproof, durable pannier kit with plenty of packing volume.

Reckless 40L on mid-weight ADV or dual sport bikes

The Reckless 40L is a great choice for riders with a backpacker's mentality. Slimming your kit down, deleting the non-essentials, and keeping it tight and light works well on mid-weight ADV bikes like this T7, and it's also a great choice for thumper dual sports like the Beta 500. That versatility means that for our staff, the R40 may be the most-used piece of luggage. The smaller form factor when mounted on the bike, and the less-is-more packing ethos that comes with it, resonate with riders that focus on the ride quality, but still pack a pared-down camp kit.

This Triple Black setup without Aux Pox on the T7 provides 50L of space, a good size for the rider with a backpacking-style kit. A lightweight toolkit, some tire plugs, a mini-SAE inflator, a bikepacking camping setup, and cooking essentials all fit nicely in this R40 configuration.

With this trimmed load, the T7 handles well, ripping sand washes and high-speed dirt.

Adding Aux Pox to the kit, like with this Beta 500 RS setup, gives 8L of additional space for a Dromedary, Sig bottles for extra fuel, or space for tools or tubes. The R40 with Aux Pox is a great option for routes in places like Baja, where it's smarter to play it safe and pack the extra water and fuel in your Aux Pox, while still maintaining the nimble handling of the lighter, smaller dual sport.

The Gnome tank bag or Gnat Bar Bag both provide space for organizing your phone, charging cables, chapstick, knife, multi-tool, or gels and bars; plus, the Gnome offers 1.5L of hydration on the tank if you choose to run with no backpack.

The Alpine 60L - Lightweight Rackless Luggage

For a true lightweight luggage setup, the Alpine 60L Rackless shaves about 1/3rd of the weight of the Reckless 40L setup, trading in the fully-featured bombproof construction and modularity of the R40 for a simple, lightweight 60L setup.

We’ve run the Alpine 60L on middleweight ADV bikes like the 890 for a minimalist adventure bike luggage kit, and it’s very at home on performance-focused thumper dual-sports like the Honda CRF450RL. The 450-class bikes beg for routes that integrate singletrack and technical sections, and the light weight of the A60 helps maintain the 450 off-road potential.

We've just re-stocked the A60 in Woodland and new color Triple Black.

Later this summer and fall, we're stoked to get out and test more luggage configurations on upcoming Dusty Lizard trips and Mosko team trips!
