When riding fast and light during summer, it's tempting to ditch your rain layers for more breathable gear suited to the warm conditions. But even in the hot months, forecasts are unreliable, and conditions change unexpectedly. That's where the Barfly Microshell comes in.
Deployed, it's a lightweight, stretchy 3-layer overpant with 20K/20k waterproof breathability. When stashed away, it prioritizes pack space, fitting easily into your backpack or tail bag, so it's always there when you need it. Whether you are heading out for a day on the trails or an extended ADV trip, the Barfly Microshell is so compact and highly waterproof that you might ask yourself, "Why not bring it?"
At 635 grams (22.4oz), the Barfly Microshell 3L overpant is our lightest waterproof pant. It blends 2-way stretch 20D Stretch Nylon with 4-way 160D Stretch Nylon reinforced knees and lower leg to balance weight and packability with durability where it counts.
It is the perfect way to add waterproof protection and extend the performance range of our Woodman, Kiger, or Surveyor Pants (or any other non-waterproof pant). The full zip overpant design allows you to change as quickly as the weather. Silicone gripper elastic cuffs fit securely around the boot to seal out the wind and weather.
When not in use, the Barfly stuffs into an integrated drop pocket to easily stash away until you need it. Even fair-weather trips have their moments. Bring along some reassurance with the Barfly Microshell.
Our apparel is designed to fit true to size over body armor - no need to size up; we've done the math for you.

I used to use my backpacking shells back in the day for emergency rain protection but destroyed enough rain pants and a couple jackets that I gave up on the ultralight options. These Barfly pants are everything that I wished I had years ago. They have extra protection in the lower legs where needed and they also have a stretch material that makes mounting and dismounting the bike much easier and protects the crotch from tearing open. I also dig how they fit over my Tech 7 boots with ease. I wore them over my Woodsman pants as a wind layer and they added the perfect amount of warmth. I haven't used them in a rain storm yet, but I live in Washington, so that day will come soon enough. I wouldn't use these as full-time pants or go crashing through sticker bushes with them, but they are perfect for stashing in your bag for the inevitable rain events.
I needed some waterproof pants as light and compact as possible, but still durable enough, especially at the bottom of the legs where hiking ones usually fail. Those fits the bills perfectly, are very easy to put on and comfortable thanks to the stretch (and thanks to the stretch, they do not need to be overly baggy). Tested in rain and snow for hours. I will definitely buy the jacket once it is available in Europe.
Love the pants and their packability. I will be taking them with me on our ride of Ireland, the Isle of Man and the 2024 Malle Rally in Scotland & England. Space and weight are a big deal and given the unpredictability of the weather in Great Britain and Ireland, I'm sure they will come in handy.
Its unreal how small I can pack these for how tough the lower, essential areas of durability are. They don't pack as small as my lightweight backpacking waterproof pants but I doubt they would fare well against highway speeds, much less a hot engine or a crash! Plus, they fit over the massive uppers of my Leatt enduro boots perfectly. 10/10
Size S is at the limit over MM Woodsman Enduro OTB size S that fits perfect. Did not tried yet with knee brace but seems at the limit also. The stretch fabric is a nice feature. Let’s see them in the rain and over o long period of time from durability point of view - the material is quite thin. I give them five start but 4.5 is closer to reality.
